It's nice to find a novel set in Wales . Ireland, Scotland, and England seem to get all the press, so Wales is a bit more exotic. I felt a little lost at times with a rushed explanation of why situations were the way they were and thought maybe things were set up earlier, so I wonder if there is a prior book in the series.Welsh history is not only a bit alien to Americans, it's also as complicated as the other nations in the British Isles, and that's one of the difficulties of setting the scene there--that and those awful names! Thirty consonants crammed into eight syllables seems to be the average.But aside from that, the storyline is good, the characters are interesting and well developed, and the little bit of romance was sweet and heartfelt. This is no bodice ripper. The story is the main thing, and a good story it is. Lots of mystery and adventure for the feisty heroine and her dashing Gareth. Good for everybody, even YA readers.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.Vibrant characters... a murder mystery and a reignited romance... an engaging bookBy Catherine MackayOnce in a while an author comes along with a captivating story and engaging characters - Sarah Woodbury is one such author. I fell in love with this wonderful mystery and the characters that populate it, particularly Gwen, Gareth and Hywel, from the very first pages. Sarah Woodbury has brought to life the essence of 12th century Wales with its complicated politics and convoluted family connections that had such a resounding influence on the history of the Wales of old. Woven into the tapestry of twelveth century Wales is the murder mystery of who killed King Anarawd whilst he was on his way to his wedding to Elen, daughter of Owain, King of Gwynedd (it should be noted: the premise of the story is based on historical facts with a bit of fiction thrown in). Enter Gareth and Gwen - both had been sweet on each, but the romance was essentially stopped by Gwen's father because Gareth had no prospects - who begin investigating his murder under the auspices of Prince Hywel, the son of King Owain. Along the way bodies mount up and Gareth himself is accused of the murder, leaving Gwen and Hywel to find evidence that someone else committed the murder of King Anarawd; the journey will lead Gwen in particular to unexpected places and allies before she is again reunited with Gareth. Overall, Sarah Woodbury has done a fabulous job of creating her characters - Gwen and Gareth leap of the pages, so vibrant and alive and unforgettable, as indeed all her characters are. The plot was well thought out and made logical sense and the ending was a complete and unexpected surprise. As for the romance between Gareth and Gwen, reignited once more when they meet shortly after the death of King Anarawd, it was told sweetly and without it overwhelming the murder mystery. My new favourite author: Sarah Woodbury and I am looking forward to reading more of her stories.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Great first book to a wonderful historical fiction series.By G SmithThis is a great start to a wonderful series if you like historical fiction and romance. I am now almost finished reading the last book in the series and enjoyed every book. Sarah Woodbury introduces her characters and develop their character throughout the story line.The time line is 12th century Wales, so be prepared for names and places to be very unfamiliar, unless you have a good grounding in the Welsh language. In the beginning of each book, Woodbury goes over the characters as well as pronunciations of the names and places.The main characters are Gwen, Garth and Hywell. Gwen's father and brother also play parts in the story as do the other members of Hywell's family, his father the King and his brother Rhun. There are many other characters, some are the good guys and some are the bad guys. What is a good story without an antagonist to cause problems for the protagonist.The great part of this story is the strong women in Welsh history. From other books written by Woodbury, it seems that Welsh women play a strong role in the lives of their families and in the running of their country. As the stories unfold you will see the experiences from each character's point of view, the women's view point is as important as the male's view point.Gwen is a very strong character who will develop as the stories progress. Since for some of you, this is a freebie, read it, but be prepared to want to purchase the other books, you will want to know what happens as the story line progresses.See all 620 customer reviews...
