SmithAfter reading the reviews of this series of books I purchased this with reservations but am very glad that I did. The book is very nicely done. It is not specifically a book on the aircraft themselves which seems to be confusing many. This book has two very specific features which while going hand in hand are not specifically connected. The first feature is color plates of the various aircraft and unit markings for the specific ships. These are very well done and quite numerous. Each plate has a descriptive text which tells of the action and/or time period this type and color scheme was used. The second feature is a timeline history of the specific ships, where they were and when, what actions they participated in and some information on the aircraft missions during these actions. So if you are looking for a book with technical specs on the aircraft, this book is not for you. If you want a nicely organized (brief) chronology of the ships of the Imperial Japanese Navy along with color plates of the aircraft they carried complete with unit markings, this book is superb. It is not perfect, the translation from the original Spanish in many instances is complete with mis-spellings or the use of a "questionable" word (denominated used rather than designated) and in a few brief instances was not translated at all. Nothing I encountered was something that could not be figured out. Some things I found interesting:The book has plenty of color plates of the aircraft but not a single picture, line drawing or photo of the ships themselves. The book has the historys of the ships and the technical data for the ships but no technical data for the planes. The planes only have brief historys included in their color plate captions.Identification markings for the planes is covered in detail as are english translations of the Japanese names for both ships and aircraft which I've never seen before. Unit organization is also covered.3 of 3 people found the following review helpful.Well researched and illustrated survey of IJN carrier aircraftBy Malcolm12hlIn keeping with the other books in the series, this volume is the product of extremely accurate research, and is supported by very fine coloured drawings of all major types and carrier aircraft complements. The only weak point remains the poor quality of the translation into English, but this should not put off any reader, as the meaning is always clear, and the mistakes easy to see through. This book is a worthy addition to the collection of anyone interested in the naval air war in the Pacific.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Good Book on Rare IJN info!By Kevin H. SmithA good account of what each IJN carrier airgroup consisted of by squadron, aircraft, and aircraft markings from 1922-1945. A good reference for a modeler in being accurate on particular markings and aircraft of IJN carriers for this time period.See all 7 customer reviews...
