In plain English, present your protagonist with a dramatically compelling problem, throw a formidable antagonist into his/her path, and then have your protagonist struggle to prevail.Coming Out should have pulled this off beautifully. After all, the story centers on Winston Sweet, a British-born biracial boy who aspires to become a police officer. Winston, at age thirteen, also comes to the realization that he is gay and spends much of his adult life coming to terms with his sexuality and others' reactions to itI was excited to read this book. With such an interesting premise, I figured this book would have to be good. Unfortunately, however, at a slim one hundred pages, Coming Out is more like the outline of an uncompleted novel. It never deeply delves into any of the issues that it raises.Winston, the child of a white British woman and black immigrant from the Caribbean, is born in the Brixton section of London, an economically disadvantaged neighborhood, in the early 1960's. Forced to contend with racially-motivated bullying, Winston is one day rescued by a kind police officer. Impressed by the police officer, Winston resolves to serve on the police department once he grows up.Sometime later, Winston realizes that he is gay. Later, he graduates from high school, has his first sexual experience, and joins the police department. Eventually, Winston is promoted to detective. This should have been a good start to a more complicated story. But, as I said before, Coming Out 's themes are not properly fleshed out. Given the intersection of race, social class, and sexuality in Winston's life and given the intransigence of racial prejudice and homophobia in the Western world, Coming Out should have been somewhat ambiguous, maybe even messy, in its denouements and resolutions. The problem is, we never see Winston truly struggle. After the encounter with the police officer, the bullies who torment Winston are never mentioned again. Winston never bumps heads with his loving parents until the very end. He gets onto the police force without any undue difficulty and is promoted without undue difficulty. Winston also always seems to have a boyfriend lined up despite the fact that he is deeply closeted. Even Winston's efforts to hide his sexuality lack drama. His parents, coworkers, and most of his acquaintances never suspect anything. The fact that Coming Out over-relies on description and exposition to carry the story along further weakens the work. As the characters are interesting or even unusual, Mr. Gane should have allowed them to tell us more about themselves--through dialogue. The little dialogue that does appear in the novel is actually very well-written, indicating to me that Mr. Gane has a good ear for it. Mr. Gane should have drawn more attention to this strength of his.Another weakness of this piece is its overly optimistic view of race relations. After helping to put down a riot in Brixton, Winston is exposed to the less-than-politically-correct attitudes of his fellow officers and the resentful attitudes of the rioters who question his allegiance to the police. Pained, Winston "made a vow to himself: he knew he could not change attitudes to black people by talk alone so he decided to be the best person he could--to be the best police officer he could and try and lead by example." Not only does Winston manage to charm his fellow officers out of their racist attitudes, he also has the same effect on his boyfriend's very sour mother, who is openly disdainful of him due to his race.At the risk of sounding "reverse-racist", I have to say that only a white writer would think that black protagonists could triumph over racism by presenting themselves well. As someone who has actually dealt with racial prejudice, I have to say that this isn't true. I've learned from personal experience that not living up to negative racial stereotypes often increases resentment in bigoted people; people with strong biases don't like having their cherished belief systems challenged. Coming Out would have been helped by having Winston cross swords with a few people like this. That's not to say that Coming Out is a bad book. Mr. Gane has a talent for description, giving Coming Out a strong sense of time and place. His description of seventies-era Brixton marketplace managed to capture the tumult and excitement of the place and I practically smelled the sweat in the gym where Winston and Roger begin their affair. As a thirty-something American who has never traveled to London, I could actually "see" these places in my mind. And his descriptions of the characters' physical appearances and mode of dress made it easy for me to keep them straight in my mind.As I said before, Coming Out was a little thin but not at all dull. If rewritten with an eye to proper story development, this book could very well become LGBTQ literary canon.0 of 0 people found the following review helpful.Review of Review by Ebony EllisBy C.
