M Mills"The Sorrows of Young Werther" is a tragic novel written by Johann Wolfgang von Goethe (1749-1832). The short novel was published to wild acclaim in 1774. It was written with passion as Goethe incarnates for literature lovers the Storm and Stress movement in German Romanticism. Goethe would go on to write many more weighty classics such as "Faust": "The Travels of Wilhelm Meister: and esoteric scientific essays and travel accounts. Yet, many years after I took a course on Goethe, at the University of Louisville, that I love the most of all his works. The plot is simple. Werther is a young German artist and poet who lives in a small town. He is attracted to Charlotte the eldest daughter of an estate agent who has befriended the shy young man. Charlotte is engaged and later marries Albert. Young Werther is so lovesick he blows his brains out at midnight with the pistols he has borrowed from Albert. End of tale. And yet.....! The book is rich with poetry and passionate longing. Werther is at one with nature wondering about the nature of the afterlife. In this he bears a resemblance to Lord Hamlet who muses about that "bourne from which no traveler has yet returned." Werther sees nature as an open grave longing for death when he realizes his beloved Lotte is unattainable in this life. The novel is a depiction of the sensitive artist dealing with middle class society. Werther is too idealistic and too much a dreamy lover to live in this world. This short story is like a punch to the stomach in the impact and memories it will leave in your soul. The work has been much copied most notably by the late nineteenth century lush romantic opera produced by the pen of Jules Massenet. A classic work by a genius.5 of 5 people found the following review helpful.Poor formatting and editing in the Kindle versionBy RCI was excited to read this classic and I did enjoy it. However, there are some issues with the Penguin Classics Kindle version I could not overlook. One was formatting. The translator added notes to the text to draw parallels with Werther and Goethe's life. I would have found this addition interesting if it wasn't for the fact that the notes format in such a way that a portion of the text appears out of the margins. There's no way I could read them on my reader, even if I maximized margins and made the text as small as possible. Also, the text is riddled with grammatical errors and typos. In some sections of the text (I found this most apparent when Werther quotes Ossian), it looks like the editor just highlighted the entire text and did a "Replace All" function on it. One example is where "thy" was replaced with "diy." " So you have "diy bow" or "sympadiy." Reading a classical book and finding blatant errors made it difficult to immerse myself in the book.2 of 2 people found the following review helpful.which is a parody of this great tale. I can only be grateful to Goethe ...By John ZelaznyBefore I was halfway through this book I had already connected with it on a deep level. I didn’t know what was going to happen in the end but I knew Goethe was telling my story and the opposite of my story at the same time. Ten years later I published my first novel, The Sorrows of Young Mike, which is a parody of this great tale. I can only be grateful to Goethe and encourage everyone to read The Sorrows of Young Werther. Also, if you liked it enough or even because you hated it — you should check out my parody, The Sorrows of Young Mike.See all 182 customer reviews...
