Set during the dark days of the "Red Scare" and HUAC tribunals, Kathryn, Gwen and Marcus weave their way through the troubling times of Hollywood's paranoia during the "Commie crackdown" that had everyone looking over their shoulders.One of the things I like best about this series is how the author makes these characters and settings so real. I feel like I'm AT the Garden of Allah experiencing everything this now-familiar gang is going through. It's one of the few series I've re-read more than once, because while I'm reading these books I'm IN Hollywood's golden age. Who wouldn't want to have a drink with Errol Flynn, Dorothy Parker and Humphrey BogartGet this book. Get the whole series. You won't be sorry. Time Machine back to Old Hollywood!By Crazy Cat LadyMartin's books are the closest thing to a time machine! A wonderful way to look back at Old Hollywood and its Stars...back when they deserved the capital S! This book is painstakingly researched, but he never pontificates or bores with his knowledge. All of his books are compelling and his characters engaging. I feel as if I really am there with Marcus, Kathryn and Gwendolyn, sharing and cherishing every moment spent with them. All of the Allah series books are wonderful pageturners, and I find I read them almost straight thru. I hate to stop, as I can't wait to see what happens next. His plots are complex and well fleshed out, as is his characters.You grow to love these people, its like they become family. I can't wait for book number 6!!! Do not hesitate to buy them, in fact, you need to buy the entire series! I've devoured the books in this series...too quickly, at times, for Turnbull is a master of the pageturner. I've loved rereading the previous books in order to pick up details I've missed the first time, and this installment will be no different. Once again, the laugh-out-loud episodes are deftly intermixed with touching drama, suspense, and tests on old friendships. Kathryn, Gwendolyn and Marcus are still incredibly likable characters, this time fighting the postwar witch hunt raised by the U.S. government against Hollywood. These politicians and their attitudes seem uncomfortably familiar to contemporary readers. We still get to meet the celebrities...Bette Davis and Howard Hughes figure prominently here. And Gwendolyn's road to fulfilling her dreams takes a delightful detour that left me smiling through several chapters.
